Founded in 2004 by the then 23 year old Kate, Sugar Loaf Wines has been an adventure every step of the way, taking its name from the islands which lie off the stunning Taranaki Coastline where Kate grew up. After studying Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University and several brief stints overseas, Kate moved to Marlborough and got to work. In 2007 the opportunity arose to purchase a vineyard and disused apple cider factory, we set the winery up in time for 2008... Just! and have continued to improve it every year since.

The 2014 vintage in Marlborough was a vintage where timing was everything. Late season rains challenged some winemakers but those who were able to get their fruit in prior to the rains were rewarded with exciting and vibrant Sauvignon Blanc. Our winemakers were amongst those who had their fruit tucked away in the winery before the rains and as a result, this Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and typically New Zealand.

About the Producer
Founded in 2003 by Gerry McConnell, a veteran gold-mining executive, with his late wife, Dara Gordon, Benjamin Bridge first released its flagship 2004 sparkling wines in 2013, quickly selling out all 1,400 bottles.

“For me, it wasn’t viewed as a business,” Mr. McConnell said. He set out to make "the very best that Mother Nature could give us and that would in the end be nationally and internationally recognized as fine.”

Under the expert guidance of winemakers Raphaël Brisbois (Piper-Heidsieck), Peter J. Gamble, and Jean-Benoit Deslauriers, Benjamin Bridge sparklings are made in the laborious and time-consuming Méthode Classique, using the classic Champagne grape varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The precious berries are hand-picked in small baskets, delicately pressed, and finally aged on their lees for no less than five years.

A tribute to how wine was made a thousand years ago, we decided to try something completely different this last harvest by using the ancient technique of fermenting in terracotta clay Amphorae. See article below for more details. VRM, short for Viognier, Roussanne & Marsanne, is a typical Rhone-style white blend and rather unique in BC, as there are limited plantings of Roussanne and Marsanne in the Okanagan.

Wines are by hand, a philosophy that takes shape when fruit is thinned by hand in July and ends when finished wines are lifted off the bottling line, with the work of the vintage intact. Despite the limits to production that are inherent in this choice, we favour the human touch and the winemaker’s craft over the work of machines, for the grace it brings to the vintage. These are honest demands we impose on ourselves. Letting go of the industrial norms has manifold rewards, the topmost being the joy we get from being fully immersed in a timeless food tradition.

The vineyard is located in the district of Saint Michel de Fronsac, on the highest slope of the region. The terroir produces harmonious wines, full bodied and generous, with plenty of fruit.
Jean-Luc Thunevin has been the consultant since 2002.
“…Properties that have been sleeping for a long time are finally coming out of their lethargy. For example, Château Haut-Mazeris, that belongs to the Ubald-Bocquet family (liquor Dubonnet) didn’t get much attention until Jean-Luc Thunevin was called in by the owners to revive the château. Chateau Lafont Fourcat is located in the Entre-Deux-Mers, below Castillon-la-Bataille, hanging on the spur of clay and limestone slopes of Grionde. The hillside opposite it St Emillion. Chateau Lafont Fourcat is probably one of the best quality-price ratio in Bordeaux thanks to the talent and meticulous work of its owner, Paul-Marie Morillon, who actually is a wine consultant for the famous properties of Ausonius Castles, Mondotte and Yquem.

The wine is produced and distributed by Jean-Luc Thunevin, the owner of the legendary St.-Emilion Premier Cru Classe Château Valandraud. Jean-Luc believes that quality and value should trump official classification, regardless of the price. As for this small vineyard collaboration, Thunevin has said of Winemaker Morillon that he either has to make more wine, or have less talent!

The red-wine appellation of Haut-Médoc is home to some of the world's greatest wines. These ar e labeled under their own more illustrious and expensive appellation names. Chateaux labeled simply as Haut-Médoc rarely reach such heights but nevertheless offer consistently good quality and offer some of the best value in Bordeaux.

About the Producer
Thunevin made his reputation as the godfather of the garagiste movement in the 1990s. Jean Luc, an Algerian immigrant, started his life in wine as a wine merchant and restaurant owner in Saint-Emilion. In 1989 Jean Luc figured that there was no reason he couldn't start making his own wine, and so he and his wife, Murielle Andraud, purchased a tiny plot of vines, .6 hectares to be exact, in Saint-Emilion. By 1991 Chateau Valandraud bottled its first vintage. Valandraud was a hit from the start.

About the Producer
This wine takes its name from an old story, dating back to the time when goats could still graze freely on the wild grasses around the vineyards. One black goat was renowned for its habit ofslipping away purposefully from the herd to treat itself to buds growing on the vines. As a tribute to this beast of good taste and with a knowing wink, Albert Ponnelle decided to produce an authentic and original wine, la Réserve de la Chevre Noire.

Grapes from different regions of the Côte de Beaune. Traditional vinification, with 60% of the wine matured in oak barrels.

The Thenard family has owned land in Givry since 1760. For the past several decades their estate has sold most of its production to the Remoissenet. Wine had always been bottled under the Thenard label for private customers such as Charles de Gaulle and the Pope, but was not exported to North America under the Domaine label until 2005. They own 3 premier crus in Givry where they make both red and white.

The Givry 1er Cru are made in a traditional method. After stemming, the maceration takes place for about two weeks in wooden vats. Then the wine is aged partly in oak barrels (5% new oak) and partly in foudre for 24 months. Light filtration. Bottling in November 2014.

CHABLIS

About the Producer
Gerard Tremblay, assisted by his wife Helene, is 5th generation winemaker at this 34-hectare estate located in Chablis. Most of the vines are situated in the best premier cru and grand cru appellations and the wines are some of the most sought-after in the region. A meticulous winemaker working from a superb new winery, Gerard is renowned for drawing out the typicity of the various appellations and his wines are a true reflection of the terroir from which they come.

While most of the wines are sold locally, a limited amount is exported and have deservedly drawn the attention of such notable critics as Robert Parker, Guide Hachette and Revue des Vins des France.

The entire winery works by gravity, avoiding unnecessary manipulations of the fruit or pumping of juices. Grapes are brought directly from the fields and put into pneumatic presses. The juice is then left to settle for more 12 hours before being stocked in stainless steel tanks with individual temperature controls.

About the Producer
The Vouvray vineyards are situated upstream from Tours in the North of the Loire Valley. Vines are planted on clay limestone and clay siliceous grounds on the chalky ‘Tuffeau’ soil. The vine roots overhang the cellars built in the rock nearby, which are called “Caves Troglodytes.” The caves are old quarries, dug into the limestone to build the castles and houses of the region. A constant temperature of 13C lets more than three million bottles ripen in the cool, dark tranquility.

In 2009, the classification which is a step of from Vin de Table and carries a geographic designation of origin, was replaced by the new Indication Geographique Protégé, or IGP. The Val de Loire is France's leading producer of white wines. The best known Sauvignon Blanc from this region comes from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, but there are many other excellent small producers from the region.

Fragmentation of production in Val de Loire has long been a challenge to bringing these wines to the international market, with many growers owning a few hectares here and there. With some 1,700 growers of Loire Vin de Pays wines, it is really only the negociants, who buy fruit from many growers, who can bottle significant volumes of wine under one label.

About the Producer
Bernard Maurel, age 75, married to Dominique Maurel and father of four children, is the current owner of Domaine d’Astros. A banker of renown, he is the president of the private bank Martin-Maurel, founded by his father in Marseille. “I was pruning vines before I knew how to write a cheque”, says this seasoned businessman, who for many years divided his time between two highly time-consuming businesses.

In the 1950’s, Domaine d'Astros was dedicated to producing everyday drinking wine and fruit growing. It was in 1963 that Bernard Maurel gave the estate a new lease of life. He planted new grape varieties and built a new cellar in the vicinity of the Château and in 1970 produced the estate’s first AOC Côtes de Provence. Astros turned a corner extending its production to “rosé wine” – today accounting for 75% of production – and has won a number of prizes, including regularly gold medals at the Concours Général de Paris.

About 85 percent of annual production is rosé wine, made from the delectable Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah grape varieties.

About the Producer
Domaine Durieu is fast becoming one of the stars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A very impressive Parker score for a wine at this price and without doubt an absolute bargain for the cellar.

The history of Domaine Durieu began in the 70s when Paul Durieu inherited a few hectares of vines from his mother, Lucille Avril, land which had been in the family since the 1500s. Paul built the winery and gradually expanded the family estate to their current 37 hectares in Chateauneuf du Pape, adding another 68 hectares in the Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Ventoux.

Today, Domaine Durieu is one of the most well-regarded in the region and has received many accolades for both for their Chateauneufs and their other labels as well. Since Paul's retirement in 2004, the younger generation has taken over operations at Durieu, with son Vincent in charge of winemaking and Francois and Blandine handling the marketing and business side.

The Chateauneuf vineyard has some very old vines of Grenache, some of which was planted over a hundred years ago. Of their 37 hectares in Chateauneuf, 36 are devoted to the production of red wine and one hectare is used to grow grapes for the white.

SOUTH OF FRANCE

About the Producer
The cooperative winery in Cases de Penya, a tiny village in the Roussillon region of Southern France, goes by many names, but with its Catalan culture, most Americans simply call it "Peña".

Situated less than 10 miles from the city of Perpignan, in the Agly Valley of the Pyrénées, the name "Cases de Pene" is a derivation of the Catalan for "house of stones". It is a hot, rugged, wind-swept place with distinctive, marne and black schistic soils.

Five growers jointly own the vineyards of the original Château. Another five grow wine full-time for a living, and every other family in the village owns a few acres. It is not a small operation! The heart and soul of Penya is winemaker Joseph "Tony" Gonzalez, who has 20+ years experience, a brilliant flair for winemaking, and an instinctive and profound knowledge of the vineyards and terroir.

Located in Boutenac, just south of the village of Corbières in the Languedoc region, Ollieux Romanis is now one of the largest privately owned wineries in Corbières, spanning some 130 hectares, which has belonged to the same family since 1860. "Les Ollieux" is the name of the few remaining olive trees next to the cellar, which were far more numerous before the frost of 1956. The ancestors of the actual owners chose the olive tree (also known as the poet's tree) as the emblem for the estate.

It is with the settling of the Bories family at Les Ollieux in the mid-19th century that major irrigation work was performed on the property. The wine and aging cellars were built in 1896 using original stone from the estate's quarry. The family's dedication to the estate, and skilled utilization of both traditional and modern techniques continues to contribute to the production of a portfolio of superb wines.

About the Producer
The story of the estate began in 1920, when Jean François Morel, a Swiss vintner, settled in Gascony to cultivate vines. The vineyard initially covered about 10 hectares.

His daughter Denise and her husband Jean Jegerlhener settled on the estate in 1960, and their passion for wine inspired them to build cellars and expand the vineyard. Their son Philip joined the team and now devotes his time to managing the vineyard.

Their daughter Elisabeth also has a passion for vines and wine. She decided to study oenology and became a professional oenologist. After working at the well-known Tariquet estate, and with the help of her husband, Henry Prataviera, she developed the estate which today covers 120 hectares. The first bottles were produced in 2003, and over 850 000 were sold in 2011.

The Montepulciano grapes are grown in selected vineyards in the Pescara and Chieti provinces of Abruzzo, central Italy. All the vineyards are on hillside slopes of around 300-400 metres above sea level. Despite its southerly location, the Abruzzo has cold winters with abundant rainfall. Summers are hot with a good fluctuation of temperature between day and night. During the final stages of ripening, these conditions help to develop the spicy, cherry fruit flavour, typical of Montepulciano.

But point scores don't really tell the story of these wines. Cascina Adelaide's wines have a unique style. Walking a tightrope between the modernists and the traditionalists, Sergio Molino is crafting Barolos of incredible purity, with a clarity and precision of fruit that is a revelation. They have the "stuff" of traditional Barolos, which becomes evident as they age, but what is amazing is that they are approachable younger without giving up anything in the long run. They taste like Barolo, age like Barolo, and develop a certain weight and power as they age, and yet offer (relatively) immediate pleasures soon after release.

Founded in 1858, this ‘cantine sociale’ enjoys a vast wine making history in an ideal location in the heart of Trentino where the vineyards situated from the valley floor, to altitudes ranging from 800 to 2,500 feet A.S.L. flourish. The 1,300 growers who make up Cantina La Vis have, since 1980, been concentrating on increasing the quality of their grapes in the vineyards, as part of their “Progetto di Qualita” wherein the cantina pays for quality not for quantity.

The Dipinti series, which highlights the unique characteristics of eight varietals grown in this part of Trentino. The painting on each label in the La Vis Dipinti series was created by Italian artist Paola de Manincor. Each of the Dipinti depicts a scene from the "Storie di Vite" (Life in the Vineyard).

Fontella represents the best winemaking traditions of classic Italian wines, most notably Chianti. With history dating back to the 8th century BC, Chianti was initially a white wine! In the early eighteenth century, Cosimo III de’Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, declared an area known as the Lega del Chianti as the officially recognized production area. The zone has since been expanded and also represents sub-zones, such as Chianti Classico.

Just south of Montalcino in the little medieval village of Tavernelle, the Fossacolle estate consists of four hectares, two and a half of which fall within the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG zone. A family run property with a commitment to make quality wines.

Owner Sergio Marchetti belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. The family’s descendants have lived and farmed on this land for generations. In the 1980s, the owner of the lands gifted Fossacolle to the family when he sold the properties. Fossacolle is four hectares of vineyards in the medieval town of Tavernelle in southern Montalcino. This area benefits from the wind of nearby Maremma which creates a perfect climate to grow and to mature grapes. Sergio and his family manage the vineyards and his son-in-law, Adriano Bambagioni, with the help of his son Stefano, carry out all the enological and commercial aspects of Fossacolle.

Made from Glera grapes grown in the Trivento hills. The vines are carefully managed and trained using both the double Guyot system and the Italian training system of "cordone speronato." After harvesting and gentle pressing hte must is put into stainless steel tanks for the fermentation of the still wine. When ready the must is naturally decanted and then transferred into the pressure tanks for the sparkling fermentation. It stays in the tanks on the yeast for about one month before bottling until it is perfectly sparkling.

La Kiuva is a tiny co-op in the Vallée d'Aoste, whose headquarters are in Pied de Ville. It was created in 1975 and their first vintage was 1979. Today, it consists of just 60 growers comprising 25 hectares of vines (18 in DOC) and producing around 8000 cases total. In this way it is more akin to a fine small winery with each grower tending their small plot like in Burgundy with the co-operative's agronomist ensuring the highest quality of viticulture. Most of the grower-members farm organically.

After the grapes are selected and harvested, they are placed in small cases in dry, well aired rooms. In this way, the grapes dry naturally and gain an extraordinary high concentration of sugars, glycerine, and aromas. After 3 months, the grapes are softly pressed. Due to the low temperature, the process of fermentation is long and slow; maceration takes also more than one month. The wine makes then an aging in medium-sized Slavonia oak barrels, where it remains for about 30 months. The bottle ageing is at least 8 months before release.

Sicily provides the perfect environment for the production of organic wines, in fact most would agree that Sicily is the best region in the whole of Italy for the production of organic grapes. The abundance of sunshine combined with the sea breezes and low rainfall combine to make ideal grape-growing conditions: there are no problems with ripening grapes and there is very little disease, so our grapes have always been virtually organic, with the minimum of treatments. The result is consistently excellent quality grapes.

Utmost care for the environment is paramount in the LaMura production, from utilizing beneficial predators in the vineyards, to packaging our wines in lightweight bottles with recyclable closures. Our philosophy dictates minimal environmental impact and preservation of the area, be it under vine or in its natural state.

The Sandrone winery was founded in 1978, born from a desire to make the finest possible expression of the Nebbiolo grape from the unique terroirs of the Langhe. This passion has informed the decision making at every step of the process. Furthermore, the wines should represent the best quality achievable at every price point. In effect, the basic wines are made with the same commitment to quality as the luxury cuvees.

Currently the estate farms a total of 27 hectares, 75% of which are owned, and produces between 90-100,000 bottles (about 8,000 twelve-bottle cases) per year. None of the wines are made from purchased grapes, and the rented vineyards are managed and farmed in exactly the same way as our estate vineyards. The current lineup of 5 bottlings was finalized after the 2001 vintage.Throughout all the winery's growth and expansion, Luciano has never lost track of the things that brought him his initial success: wines of integrity, purity and deep expression, made with passion and honesty to provide great drinking pleasure

The Scagliola estate is located on a hill at San Siro in Calosso, a small village in southern Piedmont, on the last hills of Monferrato, on the edge of the Langhe. A bit of sand, some layers of marl and a good dose of limestone characterize the soil. The estate is run by the brothers Maggiorino and Mario Scagliola and was started by their grandfather in 1945.

Mario is in charge of the winery. The previous generations were growers selling their wines in bulk. From 1980 onwards, the Scagliola brothers started investing in facilities to bottle Moscato wines and subsequently added rotofermenters for red wines. The facilities are state of the art and new buildings and machinery are added continuously to allow for growth.

Maggiorino is in charge of the vineyards. The winery currently cultivates 28 hectares of Barbera, Moscato, Brachetto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Dolcetto and Merlot grapes.

Recognized regularly by Gambero Rosso, Wine Spectator and Parker, Scagliola is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Piedmont.

Ameal, based in the popular town of Ponte de Lima, specializes in the Loureiro grape. This is one of those Vinho Verde (+ Minho--the regional, "vin de pays" appellation designation) estates trying to make wine without the fizz and in a more serious style.

While these are in a more serious style, it is not a white Rhone, nor intended to be. Don't expect power and concentration here. That's not what they are.

This region through which the Rio Douro runs down to Porto produces very little red and white wine for domestic consumption as its grapes are reserved for the making of Port. The red table wines of this region have often been overshadowed by their famous Port relatives, but recently the Douro has become known for high quality red wines at a very modest price. Ranging in style from fresh and vibrant Burgundian style reds to full bodied old world style monsters, there is something for everyone in this category. Exopto is made by Bordeaux native Tom Puyaubert in his cellar in the Rioja DOC. This wine is a clear example of what's possible when Rioja's best terroirs and grapes are combined with Rioja's finest traditional and modern winemaking methods by an extremely talented winemaker. The end result is a wine that can age for many decades.

All the key ingredients are here: outstanding, cool vineyards on rocky soils, very old vines, low yields (yes, at these prices!), a terrific little winery replete with new cement tanks and large format oak and a passionate winemaker/owner (Tom Puyaubert) who clearly understands the universal principals of high quality wine.

Tom is in fact a Frenchman who married a local girl, which may explain the atypical, artisanal approach that is found at Exopto. The emphasis is very much on the vineyards while the small scale production (around 3,000 cases - tiny for Rioja) and attention to detail was equally impressive.

These factors have resulted in Exopto producing modern Rioja in the very best sense - i.e., Rioja that is the result of well tended vineyards and quality wine making. Rioja that takes the best from the past (Graciano for example and use of concrete tank.

Thirty years ago, Juan had a vision. After researching the best wines in the world, he decided to grow Bordeaux grapes in Navarra. He bought Merlot cuttings from a nursery that sold to famous châteaux in St. Emilion and Pomerol, most notably the hallowed Château Pétrus.

A pioneer in Navarra, over the years Juan’s bodega has become a reference point for quality in the region. The 100-hectare (247 acre) estate is located just south of the Ebro River. With a focus on the Merlot grape, Barón is the most serious of the winery’s lower-end bottlings. At once, Baron shows power and bright flavors with no green characters, with a structure that is integrated and harmonious. The southern district of Navarra has limestone that imparts characters of minerality and acidity that are unique to this place. Bodegas Los Frailes is a family-run Single Estate, situated in the south-west of the province of Valencia, 80 kms inland at 600-700 m above sea level, in the valley known as ‘Els Alforins’.

The name, ‘Casa Los Frailes’ (The Friars’ House) was formerly the property of the Jesuit friars until the confiscation of all Church property in Spain in 1767. The Velázquez family bought it at auction in 1771.

In 1999 the current generation, headed by Miguel Velázquez, undertook an ambitious project. They reorganised the vineyards giving priority to the indigenous Monastrell, returned to methods inherited from traditional agriculture and implemented organic viticulture methods. A new cellar was constructed creating a modern facility with all the latest technology.

Los Frailes are totally dedicated to the cultivation of organically grown vines on their Estate. The average age of the vines is over 29 years old, with over 40 year old Monastrell vines. The unique climate of ‘Els Alforins’ and the low yields, 3000 kilos per hectare, are the two prerequisites to obtain high quality organic wines. The low yields not only improve the quality but also the sustainability of the vineyards which makes them naturally more resistant to disease.

The result is a range of exceptional wines with very unique personalities and great quality.

Cellers Fuentes epitomizes the winemaking revolution that has seized hold of Spain's Priorat region in the past 15 years and propelled it into the spotlight. Founded in 1995, this 75-acre property was purchased in 2002 by John Hunt, an international entrepreneur and owner of Oriel Wines. Winemaking is under the supervision of the talented young winemaker Josep Angel Mestre. Gran Clos graces the wine lists of many of Spain’s most prestigious restaurants, not least among them the world-class establishment of El Bulli.

40 miles southwest of the fashionably bustling city of Barcelona, the Priorat region has been hailed as a modern-day superstar of Spanish winemaking. This arid, remote and rugged province, which derives its name from ancient priories in which ascetic Spanish monks over the centuries secluded themselves from the world outside, is best known today for its production of truly awe-inspiring reds. Grenache and Carignan are the bedrock of Priorat wines.

The rather austere landscape is noted for its dark slate soil known as "Ilicorella" meaning "licorice."

It all started with the ambition of a restless man, Juan de Porcioles, who had always dreamed of living in the country, cultivating the land and raising his own livestock … So it was that, in 1992, the Porcioles-Buixó family bought the property. Since then, the estate has been developed with hard work and enthusiasm, and endowed with its own character and singularity.

Today, it is known as Finca de Flix. At the same time, Juan de Porcioles, a great lover of wine, gradually developed the idea of cultivating his own vineyard to produce wines with a distinct personality and of the highest quality.

So, in 1998, and with the help of friends and family, he planted the first vineyard, Vinya Vella, by hand, prompting the recovery of winegrowing in the region. This was quite a project, which, today, thanks to his wife and children, is becoming a reality.

The estate -which belongs to Porcioles-Buixó family- is located in the Noguera region, in the council of Balaguer and it belongs to Costers del Segre D.O. It is a country farm that has an extension of 700 ha from which 71 are devoted to wine growing in order to elaborate the exclusive wines of our cellar.

Calatayud has a broadly continental climate, characterised by warm summers and cold winters. Rainfall is relatively low (less than 350mm per year) and summer temperatures are moderated by the altitude. This altitude also contributes to the wide diurnal (day-night) temperature range of 12.5°C which provides ideal conditions for viticulture.

Average daytime temperatures range from just over 30°C in July and August to around 10°C in December and January. This moderate climate ensures a long growing season and slow ripening of our fruit, while the cool nights provide the vines with the opportunity to rest and help to preserve acidity.

Rainfall, though low, is concentrated in the early part of the growing season, with half the annual rain falling between April and July. In contrast, the late summer is usually warm and dry, interrupted by only the occasional thunder storm.

About the Producer
In 1994 Roy and Rachael Cecchetti purchased a two and a half acre parcel in the Sonoma Valley, one mile east of the Plaza. On that parcel, situated next to the grand willow tree and the natural spring fed pond, was an old backhouse. Through some research of the property, it was discovered that the old backhouse was once home to vintners, writers, artists and those who craved the solitude and enjoyment of nature. Backhouse wines were created to bring these memories back to life for a new generation.

Winemaker Bob Broman has a long and successful career finding quality vineyard sources throughout California and crafting consistently top quality, value driven wines that are meant for immediate consumption. When launching Cecchetti Wine Company, Roy enlisted Bob Broman, who managed winemaking duties for him at Pepperwood Grove. This experience allowed Bob to travel across California's vast wine regions nurturing grower relationships to ensure quality fruit sources.

Bob's commitment to detail creates the backbone for blending stylistic wines that are approachable, consistent, a good value, and can be enjoyed any day of the week. Together Roy and Bob strive to show wine consumers that good wine does not always come with a hefty price tag.

About the Producer
Esser Vineyards is a family-owned winery based in Napa Valley. Founded in 2001 by Manfred Esser, who began his career in Germany, where he was born, as salesman for Germany's leading winery. Later he joined Napa Valley's "Cuvaison Wines" as a partner and President.

For Esser Vineyards his credo was to craft wines of which his customers would say "they are more than I expect." He set out to make his wines easily accessible price wise all the while ensuring that quality-wise they could stand up to wines costing considerably more. To achieve his goal he worked with Paul Moser, the renowned winemaker who has many times been acclaimed by Robert Parker for his excellence in crafting outstanding wines.

Esser Vineyards wines are an elegant expression of fruit forward style Californian wines.

About the Producer
Hanzell is California's first 'boutique' wine estate. Founded in 1953 by Diplomat James D. Zellerbach and his wife, Hana, who became fond of Burgundy and its wines while he served as an American ambassador to Italy.

The Ambassador's Vineyard, planted in 1953, is the oldest continually producing vineyard of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the New World. Selections from the original plantings at Hanzell have become known as the "Hanzell clone," and have been planted throughout California.

Winemaking at Hanzell was very Burgundian from the beginning and Zellerbach was among the first in California to utilize French oak barrels. In addition, Zellerbach designed the first temperature controlled stainless steel fermentation tanks used in conjunction with the traditional French oak barrels. He was also was the first to use nitrogen in bottling.

The current winemaker is Michael McNeill. The house style has remained consistent. The original 6 acre vineyard has grown to 42 acres today, allowing Hanzell to produce 6,000 cases annually: three quarters Chardonnay and one-quarter Pinot Noir.

About the Producer
Line 39 wines originate from select vineyards located in and around the renown 39th parallel, including some of the most prestigious winegrowing regions in California. These ideally situated, cool-climate vineyards foster slow, even ripening of the grapes, enabling us to produce outstanding super-premium wines with an ideal balance of rich, ripe fruit flavors and crisp acidity.

Winemakers Mark Rasmussen and Kryss Speegle travel across California’s vast wine regions to nurture grower relationships and secure the best available fruit sources. This unending commitment to quality provides the foundation for blending stylistic wines that are sophisticated, approachable, consistent and always enoyable. Our ultimate goal is to show wine consumers that good wine does not always come with a hefty price tag.

About the Producer
In 1989, Melville Vineyards, a family owned and operated enterprise was founded in Sonoma County's Knights Valley, where Ron Melville grew high quality, much sought after Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1996, Ron's desire to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay brought Melville Vineyards to Lompoc's Sta. Rita Hills, located in the western Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, California.

The Melville estate achieves quality through the integrity of its farming practice and its respect to the microclimate. The Melvilles believe that a fine wine begins in the terroir or microclimate of a vineyard.

Brewer employs a minimalist approach at both his own winery and at Melville, allowing the distinctive terroirs to shine. For Melville, he makes two styles of Chardonnay. Inox is made in stainless steel with no oak or malolactic fermentation, producing a flinty wine with vibrant acidity. The estate wine is more Burgundian, barrel fermented with partial malolactic.

About the Producer
Cecchetti Wine Company was launched by Roy Cecchetti, and his wife, Rachael, in 2006. The company produces consistent and approachable wines of excellent value from California, including the emerging Lake County AVA. The company produces Redtree, a line of affordably priced California appellation wines that have been widely acclaimed, and was selected by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as a “Best Buy."

Roy Cecchetti was enjoying a glass of wine with his adult daughter in his backyard when she mentioned how much she loved the beautiful Red Oak tree growing on the property. “That tree captured something special for us,” says Roy Cecchetti, a long time wine industry veteran. “It was a symbol of the beautiful moments that nature provides for us here in California. Wine is a way of capturing those moments.”

Like that symbolic tree, Redtree wines are rooted in California’s rich agricultural history and celebrate the natural beauty of the Golden State. Our winemakers combine state-of-the-art technology with Old World artisan winemaking techniques to craft premium wines that consistently over-deliver on quality. Boldly flavored, smoothly textured, and unusually complex, Redtree wines are purposely styled to delight consumers seeking distinctive varietal character, structure and balance. They’re rich, but refined; fruit-forward, but complex; authentic, but progressive.

Born out of mild madness for the endlessly enjoyable wines of Southern France and Umbria. Further motivated by the rarity of freshness & acidity in domestic wines without sacrificing the all too hedonistic pleasures of ripe fruits.

Simple Solace wines are picked at moderate sugar levels, utilize 12 months barrel aging, & are not bled off. 100% of the fruit that makes it through our sorting gets vinified and freshness and typicity are preserved by allowing the grapes to express their true self.

About the Producer
Stuhlmuller Vineyards is located at the southern edge of the Alexander Valley, where it converges with two other highly regarded Sonoma County appellations, Chalk Hill and the Russian River Valley. On its eastern edge, the 150-acre vineyard borders the Russian River. Situated in a unique location that is part river benchlands and part hillside, the vineyard benefits from its alluvial gravel soils and the more rocky soils that comprise the hillside sections of the vineyard.

Since 1982, Stuhlmuller Vineyards has built a reputation as growers of world-class grapes, selling their coveted fruit to a number of top area wineries. By the mid-90s, Fritz Stuhlmuller was so inspired by the complex wines being made from his family's vineyard that he established a small, artisan winery bearing the Stuhlmuller name.

In 2000 Stuhlmuller Vineyards built a new winery on the property, sized precisely to handle the small amounts of world-class, estate fruit the Stuhlmullers select to create their wines. Guided by gifted winemaker Leo Hansen (and consulting winemaker Kerry Damskey), Stuhlmuller Vineyards handcrafts, small-lot wines that embody a rich, expressive charm, and a distinctive sense of place.

Purple Hands is owned and operated by Oregon winemaker Cody Wright. Cody grew up in the Willamette Valley, Oregon's most recognized and abundant wine region. With constant immersion in wineries and vineyards and with close family ties to some of the greatest wineries in the Northwest, Cody pursued the intense but rewarding work at key wineries in Oregon, New Zealand and Australia.

The original idea for the Purple Hands Blend wine label comes from a black and white picture of Ken Wright and Mike Etzel at a tuxedo dinner. The picture shows only their hands side by side, sleeves rolled up. You see the Purple etched harvest hands in contrast against the tuxedos, evoking the abstraction of the industry. The hands depiction of each harvest are a badge of honor among cellar crews, they illustrate the proof of their hard work and the passion of the vintage, a physical art piece morphing with each day.

Purple Hands primary focus is to bring beautiful wines to you every year. We have close connections to all of our vineyards, and meticulously compose the most honest expressions of terroir and clone.
